On April 15th St Paul’s sent a representative to Santiago to participate in the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition which took place at the Universidad de los Andes. Gabriel Orrego Romeu did a brilliant job, and came third among fifty-four participants from diverse schools from different parts of the country. His speech, ’Beyond the Scalpel’,was a mixture of humour and serious ideas, and was congratulated by several people, teachers and peer competitors. His teachers and school community feel very proud of his achievement.

I felt very proud of all the 2008 graduate pupils! The graduation ball at the Casino in Viña del Mar was a very beautiful event, and I’m sure everyone enjoyed it immensely. Congratulations to those who were involved in the organization, especially Felicia Salazar, who made it the memorable occasion it will remain in the memories of all those who attended. Everything was perfect: the timing, the decorations, the organization, the flowers, the food, the speeches, the service, and so on. A beautiful way to finish the school life of all these lovely teenagers! And a special vote of thanks for their patience, love and commitment to the form teachers: Sergio Varela and Leandro Peña, who, each in their own style, made moving goodbye speeches to their forms.
Good luck to all my Fourth Seniors! I wish you all the best in the future. Don’t forget me! And if you ever need help, you know where to find me. I love you all.
Christine

Last Friday, June 20th, three pupils from St. Paul’s, accompanied by their teacher, Miss Christine Evans, went to Santiago to participate in the annual ABSCH Debating Event, which took place at Santiago College. The competitors were Carla Canessa, Mailén Parodi and Daniel Ramirez. We received a warm welcome from the Santiago College organizers, and lots of lovely food. We had got up very early that day, so we really enjoyed the tasty breakfast they had prepared for us. During the morning Daniel participated as Second Speaker in the first debate. After lunc, which was very nice too, Carla and Mailen were on opposing teams in the last debate. They met friends, made new ones, and all in all, I think had a very interesting and eventful day. Congratulations to the three of them on their performance and commitment to representing the school.

To all the pupils who will be sitting for the PSU this coming week, I wish you all the best. I hope you all have results which will permit you to achieve your academic goals. The FCE people, remember that Thursday 6th is the day for Listening and Speaking, at the Chilean British Institute, I believe at 3 p m. Be there at least twenty minutes before, and don't forget your ID card, black pencils (at least two), eraser and your number (which appears on the paper I gave you).If you have lost it, telephone the Institute and speak to Maribel. She will give you the information you need. Also, don't forget that the Reading, Writing and Use of English is at the Mackay School on December 11th, starting at 9 a m. You'll also need a pen for the writing part(no pencil).
On January 24th,2007, students from our school were invited to a ceremony at The Mackay School, which commemorated its 150th anniversary. H.R.H. Princess Anne was invited as a very special visitor, and students from the Viña del Mar ABSCH schools had the opportunity of speaking to her in groups. She arrived promptly on time, as was to be expected. After speaking to members of the resident British community, she shared a few moments with firemen from the George Garland Fire Company, inspected the chapel, spoke to students of each of the British schools and finally planted a tree to commemorate the occasion of the anniversary. The students who attended were Daniel Ellwanger, Kay Wettergreen, Paula Ochsenius, Susana Viñuela, Angela Canessa, Claudia Alonso,Lorena Canessa, Pablo Mahana, Claudia Wesser, Francisca Woolvett, Francisca Jouanne and Francisca Acevedo. They attended cheerfully, even though it meant wearing a uniform in the middle of the holiday season! All in all, I believe it was a unique experience for all of them.
